Hot Hot Heat

Posted 7/20/2010

Hot Hot Heat released a new album recently called Future Breeds. This album is a bit of a new start for Hot Hot Heat. For the 5 MONR, we look at why these guys have to constantly re-invent themselves, and play the first single from the album called 21@12

Counterfit Fifty

Posted 7/15/2010

Time for some local rock with Counterfit Fifty. These guys are going to be performing as part of The 5 Minutes of New Rock Summer Party on July 31st at The Red Dog. Counterfit Fifty are a bunch of hard rockin local guys and a great live show. For the 5MONR I explain how they got their name Counterfit Fifty, and play you the song Save Me.

Columbia

Posted 7/13/2010

From Vancouver, some well respected music critics are saying these guys are going to be the next big thing in Canadian rock. Some are even calling their sound Canadian Brit Pop. For the 5MONR, I explain why I don’t quite agree with the critics and play for you the song 10 Out Of 10 from Columbia’s album Join Our Ride.

The Balconies

Posted 7/8/2010

Put two music students together, have them fall in love, then recruit one of their brothers to play bass, and you’ve got The Balconies. The Balconies are one of the hardest working Indie rock bands in Canada. Give them enough space to set up drums, bass and guitar, and they’ll play. For The 5MONR we hear Serious Bedtime from their debut self-titled album.

We Were Promised Jetpacks

Posted 7/6/2010

Time for some Scotish Rock from WWPJ. These guys have a lot of power in their sound and are building a solid following outside of their native Scotland. They are on a label called Fat Cat Records. If you like the WWPJ sound, check out other artist from the Fat Cat label, as a lot of them share a similar sound. For the 5MONR we hear Quit Little Voices from their first album These Four Walls.

The City Streets

Posted 6/29/2010

The City Streets just released their third album called the Jazz Age, and are embracing the “pay what you can” concept for this album as they are putting it up for free on their website. Many reviews for these guys call them Folk Punk Rock. For the 5MONR, I explain why Folk Punk Rock seems like an oxymoron to me and play the song Irish Rose from The Jazz Age.

New Politics

Posted 6/24/2010

These guys won’t be releasing their debut album until July 13th, yet they are already part of a huge tour across North America and their lead single Yeah Yeah Yeah is making some waves on the Indie charts. These guys are aggressive, opinionated, and all they want from you is to rock out. What else could you ask for as a fan. For the 5MONR, we hear Yeah Yeah Yeah.

We Are The City

Posted 6/22/2010

We Are The City just released their debut album in January called In A Quiet World. They claim among their influences the likes of Coldplay and Radiohead, and you can hear that kind of brooding melodic rock in their stuff. Oh, and did I mention they are just teenagers? For the 5MONR we hear You’re A Good Man.

Brken Bells

The Junction are out of Brampton, and a funny thing happened to them on the way to major label success. They dropped their label. For the 5MONR, I explain why they went from Indie, to major then back to Indie again, and play for you their laid back acoustic based track called Blue Sky.

The Dead Weather

Posted 6/1/2010

For this edition it’s The Dead Weather. This band often gets labelled as Jack White from the The White Strips latest project. But that’s not really a far shake for the band. The Black Keys

Posted 5/25/2010

The Black Keys fifth studio album Brothers was released on May 18th. This Blues Rock duo hasn’t strayed to far from the sound that made people take notice of them, but that’s perfectly fine.
