Elvis was in the building today. Yes, Elvis Stojko paid a visit to our Wolf studio this morning and I gotta say I felt like a little schoolgirl. I adore Elvis Stojko (even though I tried not to let that show too much so Elvis wouldn't think I was a complete moron!). I am a total figure skating geek. When skating comes on the TV in the winter, my husband goes outside to blow the driveway, even if it hasn't snowed for 10 days. He just doesn't get my fascination with the sport. I guess it goes back to when I was a kid and only had two TV channels living out in the country. On a Saturday afternoon it was reruns of the Littlest Hobo on CTV or figure skating on the CBC. You start to get pretty sad after watching that dog leave town after town and never finding an owner he wanted to stay with so I spent days watching figure skating on CBC. My figure skating career ended at the age of six when I couldn't master the bunny hop so I guess I was living vicariously through the likes of Manley, Orser, Browning and of course, Stojko.
I could never figure out why the judges didn't like him. The man could jump off a half inch wide blade spin four times in the air and land on tha same half ince wide blade. And he could do it better than anybody! Anyway after a couple of years away from skating, Stojko is back on the ice and is in Peterborough today to announce a special show he's bringing to the city this winter. You can bet I'll be there.
After all, I can now die happy having come into close contact with my skating heroes. I talked with Elvis Stojko and I once saw Kurt Browning at the Brookdale Avenue McDonald's in Cornwall. Take me now Lord!
