Dozens of weird and wacky world records fell and were set yesterday in the fifth annual Guinness World Records Day.
In England, 59-year-old Manjit Singh pulled a double-decker bus weighing more than eight metric tons over a distance of 21.2 meters - with his hair. It was a day of redemption for Singh who, in 2007, failed to break the record for the furthest distance to pull a double-decker bus with the ears.
Here's a few other records set on the day...
112 British commuters set a record for the most people hugging for a minute. An Italian set a new fastest time was set for eating a bowl of pasta (one minute 30 seconds, in case you want to try to beat it) and in Norway the largest ever gingerbread man was made weighing 651 kg (1,435 lb). Oh, and in Finland, people from 76 nationalities fit into a single sauna. That must have been a pleasant experience.
I've always wondered how people come up with some of these crazy ideas and why they would want to be known for them in the first place.
That said, I was at one time a Guinness World Record holder. Maybe I still am. I haven't bothered to check if the record has been broken. In July 2004 I was one of 505 dancers who attempted to break a Guinness World Record for the 'Largest Massed Performance of Highland & Step Dance'. It was to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the dance school I trained at for most of my youth. Guinness gave us the official record on Thursday, January 13th, 2005. Apparently it took some Guinness genius more than four months to confirm the record. Don't they print a book every year? Couldn't they just look in the book and decide?
Suffice to say, I did not attempt any world records yesterday. That is, unless you count a record for laziness. I actually bought 8 litres of milk at drive thru.
Here's my NFL Week 10 picks. I'm a bad 20-24 for the season!
