Music and Memories

Monday, June 01, 2009

Recently I was chatting with a friend and the conversation turned to the music we listened to when we were younger; and how thinking about that music made us think of other friends and things we did at that time... it was then that the statement “music is the soundtrack to our lives” really rang true. I have been doing some thinking since that conversation; trying to think of songs that don't remind me of something... and I just can't do it... all of my favourite bands and songs have some kind of connection to my life; and that is probably why a lot of them are my favourite bands and songs.

Try this as an experiment. Ask someone what their all time favourite song is, and why it is their favourite song. Ask them when they first heard the song, what were they doing when they heard it, even who they were with when they first heard it... I am almost sure you will see that the person has some sort of emotional reaction, related to the song and a moment in their life. I bet the answers you get from the person will even trigger a conversation that builds on their memories of their favourite song... much like a chain reaction. If you are too shy to try this little experiment with someone else, then try it with yourself; take a sheet of paper and write down everything that comes into your mind when you think about your favourite song or band... you may surprise yourself about what it makes you think of.

A first kiss, winning the big game, hanging out with friends, a school dance, a special date with a special person, when you met your husband / wife, the birth of your children... the possibilities are endless... and so is the music and memories in your life.

Here are some of my faves:

Van Morrison – Have I Told You Lately ( first song my wife and I danced to at our wedding)

John Lennon – Beautiful Boy (heard it the day my son was born and just said everything to me)

Jackson Browne – Running On Empty (album was always played at my mom & dad's house parties in the 70's)

If you would like to share some of your faves and why they are your faves... drop me an email: scott@thewolf.ca

Until next time...
