Just when I think I’ve experience all Peterborough has to offer I learn a little more about the quirks and quarks and interesting characters that make Peterborough tick. For instance, I had heard before there was a woman in town who was pretty well known for her home made suckers but I hadn’t ever tasted one until this morning. Leslie Parnell was kind enough to drop one off for me today. What a treat!

It reminds me a bit of a long ago trip to a Northern Ontario sugar bush as child….but a little less maple-y.
Jean Murney is probably in her 90’s now but she still churns out hundred of Murney Suckers for friends, neighbours and admirers as she has been doing for generations from her Rose Avenue home. I’m told it’s a rite of passage to lose a filling or two to a Murney’s sucker. I’m glad to report that my mouth is still intact and my taste buds are rejoicing!
If you have yet to taste a Murney Sucker for yourself, Leslie will be selling them at her campaign fundraising BBQ on Saturday, 2-7PM, 522 Monaghan Rd. Or you can just wander down to Rose Avenue and look for the house surrounded by smiling toothless children!
