St John Ambulance CPR/First AID Course schedule March - May

St. John Ambulance is Canada’s #1 First Aid Trainer and the authority in First Aid. St. John Ambulance First Aid/CPR training saves lives and reduces the seriousness of injury. Courses are presented by nationally- certified instructors, and include award-winning videos. Courses are interesting & they’re fun! St. John has taught CPR to the local hospital staff, the Health Unit, the Community Police, R.C.M.P., O.P.P., Canadian Coast Guard, Ontario Hydro, local industries, Board of Education staff, and government agencies. St. John Ambulance First Aid certificates are valid for 3 years and include CPR and AED! We also provide AED Sales.

STANDARD FIRST AID Our Standard Certificate is valid for 3 years! Includes CPR and AED training! This course provides a certificate in Standard First Aid & a CPR/AED certificate. 13 to 14.5 hours of instructional time (2 days); includes wonderful 435-page First Aid/CPR/AED book. ****This course is required by the WSIB if your place of work employs more than 5 employees per shift.****

Hospice Peterborough - Walking Together

What is “Walking Together”?
Experiencing the loss of a loved one can leave us feeling depleted of energy and lacking desire to get out and do things on our own. This walking group offers an opportunity to re-energize, while sharing and listening to others who have also experienced a loss.

Who can participate?
Individuals who have experienced the death of a parent, spouse, child or significant other are welcome to participate in one or both of the weekly walks.
When does this Group Start? April 15 to June 13, 2013
o April 15 - Monday morning - gather at 9:45am and start walking at 10:00 am
o April 18 - Thursday evening- gather at 6:15 pm and start walking at 6:30pm Another session is planned for September – October – Dates to be determined

Where do we meet?
Participants gather (rain or shine) at Hospice Peterborough with appropriate walking clothes 439 Rubidge Street, Peterborough On K9H 4E4.

What should I expect?
Walks will be at a casual pace, starting and ending at the Hospice Peterborough office. There will be a variety of routes and lengths of walks to meet everyone’s needs. The routes will travel through the quiet neighborhoods surrounding the Hospice office and will conclude with refreshments and a time to chat. Trained hospice volunteers will also be walking to offer support.

From the comfort of your own home (or office) you can participate in a fundraiser which will support children and youth impacted by Learning Disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The LDAP is already welcoming bidders to their On-Line auction which began May 6^th and runs to the 24^th. Participants can select from an array of items, everything from hotel stays to taxi passes.

“The donors this year have been very generous and we are excited to offer so many different items.” stated Shari Davis, Executive Director of the Association. “We are very grateful to all who donated, and to all who will participate. The funds collected will stay and operate here, helping people in the communities we serve.”

Davis noted that new auction items will continue to be posted on the web site as the Auction progresses. Each item has a picture, a description, listed starting bid, and increments. The following are dates for upcoming Senior Summit Walks, as June represents Seniors month. We are hoping you can announce the walks in your event calendar.

All walks will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and are between 2- 8 km in length. Free to participate.

On May 25th, 2013 the Peterborough Chapter of The Huntington Society of Canada is hosting their Annual Walk to Cure Huntington's Disease

The Walk to Cure is our major fund raiser & we are very grateful to our supporters & hope that this years Walk will be bigger & better than last years.

Walkers gather pledges - You can also pledge Online at www.hdpeterborough.org There will be prizes for the Walker who has the largest amount of total donations and for the Walker who has the greatest number of pledges.

We can always use more volunteers. It may be possible for students who volunteer on the day of the walk to earn credits towards their volunteer hours. Please ask about it. Heads Up for Inclusion Amazing Race!

Heads Up for Inclusion is getting set to kick-off the summer with the Amazing Race! On May 25, 2013, students and members of the community will complete a series of fun challenges aimed at promoting inclusion in Peterborough. “This will be an Amazing Race like no other,” says Caitlin Dunham, HUI’s program and outreach co-ordinator. She says HUI is looking for students, organizations, and businesses to form teams, representing all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. “This is a way for Peterborough to come together and show that we’re a community that appreciates diversity and works together to remove barriers,” says Dunham. Community members and businesses are encouraged to help support teams through sponsorship and donations. “We really want everyone to be able to participate in this event and feel included,” says Dunham. “We need community support to make the Amazing Race a success.” Participants will work in teams of four to complete tasks and play games at various locations in downtown Peterborough. They’ll be challenged to use teamwork to tackle barriers and obstacles to mobility around the city. So, do you have what it takes? How many steps will you take for a cure? On Sunday, May 26th join the Peterborough Chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Canada and support families affected by Cystic Fibrosis in Peterborough and the surrounding areas by walking with us at the 5th Great Strides™ walk at Nicholls Oval Park. Registration opens at 9am and the walk starts at 10am. All funds raised through pledges and donations will support important Foundation-funded cystic fibrosis research and care.

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common, fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. There is no cure and the average age of mortality is 27 years old. Children with Cystic Fibrosis struggle to have a normal childhood.

Families like The Romanelli Family of Peterborough. Anthony Romanelli’s parents have been fighting this devastating disease since their son was first diagnosed in the fall of 2008, shortly after his second birthday. He follows a demanding daily routine of physical and inhalation therapy to keep his lungs free from infections. This 6 year old must consume a large number of enzymes, about 20 pills each day, to help his body absorb nutrients from food. And, like thousands of families affected by CF across Canada, Anthony’s parents spend every night dreaming of the day a cure is found.

Ashlynne McGuigan is one of the first children to be diagnosed in Ontario with Cystic Fibrosis through the newborn screening test. Ashlynne was diagnosed at 3.5 weeks old before any major complications could occur, by a month old all treatments were put in place by her team at Sick Kids. Now 4, Ashlynne is enjoying her first year at public school and living each day to the fullest. Ashlynne visits Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto every 3 months for a check in that can last between 2 – 5 hours depending on the test her teams needs her to perform to monitor her health (blood work, chest x-rays, pulmonary function test, spitting of sputum, Physiotherapy and dietitian review).

“I have seen the devastation that Cystic Fibrosis can leave in its wake,” said Erin Sullivan, the volunteer Vice President of the Peterborough Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Sullivan also lives with Cystic Fibrosis. “I witness regularly, the effects of the illness on myself and my CF friends, many of whom have passed away and many who are currently in the hospital fighting to breathe. I have also had the privilege of witnessing the effect that fundraising has had in improving the length and quality of our lives. When the foundation began, most children with Cystic Fibrosis didn't survive long enough to attend school. I turned 34 this year! Please join our chapter at our Great Strides™ walk. Step by step, you will be helping to fund the search for a cure, or control, for this fatal disease.”

For the Cystic Fibrosis community in Canada, research has proven to be the surest way to invest in a brighter future for children and young adults with Cystic Fibrosis, and the best way to keep hope alive. Cystic Fibrosis Canada also supports the Sick Children’s Hospital Cystic Fibrosis clinic, and provides specialized care for people in our community with Cystic Fibrosis, and their families.

4th Annual Kids Fishing Derby

Local police officers will be joining young anglers to cast a line during the 4th Annual Kids Fishing Derby, Sunday May 26th.

Hosted by the Harvey Community Policing Committee, this derby will run from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon at the Sunrise Resort in Lower Buckhorn. Children can register in advance, or between 9:00 and 9:30 am. All participants are asked to bring their own rod, reel and life jacket but if they don’t have equipment there are rods available to borrow. Bait will be provided. Three trophies donated by Sunrise Resort, Three Castles Resort and the Buckhorn Tourist Association will be awarded for the heaviest weight and a fourth trophy, donated by the Harvey Community Policing will be given out for the largest fish. The anglers can look forward to meeting members of the Peterborough OPP Marine unit and a BBQ lunch after the event.

The derby is sponsored by Fishing Forever, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding worthwhile fishing, conservation and education projects. It is also supported by the Police Association of Ontario, Canadian Tire, Sunrise Resort, Three Castles Resort, the Toronto Sportsmen Show, Harvey Community Policing and the Buckhorn Tourist Association.

Fishing Forever chair Bob Izumi is an avid supporter of recreational fishing for both the young and the young at heart. “I love to create opportunities for children and families to go fishing,” states Izumi. “Fishing is one of the very best ways for parents and other adults to establish productive and healthy relationships with children.”

Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides (LFCDG) is a national charity. Its mission is to assist Canadians with a medical or physical disability by providing them Dog Guides at no cost.

Since 1983, Lions Foundation of Canada has provided specially trained Dog Guides to more than 1,700 men, women and children from coast to coast. Each Dog Guide costs approximately $20,000 to raise and train yet they are provided at no cost to qualified applicants.

Lions Foundation of Canada operates two facilities in Ontario, the head office and training facility in Oakville, and a breeding and training facility in Breslau. All Dog Guides and required training, including transportation and accommodation, are provided at no cost to qualified applicants. Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides does not receive any government support and relies on the support of donations and fundraising events from service clubs, corporations, foundations and individuals across the country.

Peterborough in Portrait: County-wide Inclusive Art Exhibition Welcomes Contributors

Community Living Peterborough, in partnership with the Canadian Canoe Museum, is calling for portrait submissions from artists - professional, emerging and student - living in the City or County of Peterborough in order to create an exhibition mosaic of portraits representing our dynamic and diverse citizenship. Entitled Peterborough in Portrait: Our Inclusive Community, the exhibition will celebrate Community Living Peterborough’s 60th Anniversary and its mandate to open doors to equal opportunities for people living with an intellectual disability.

Curated by acclaimed-artists Michael Dumas and Peer Christensen and Jeremy Ward, Curator of the Canadian Canoe Museum, the exhibition will be showcased at the Canadian Canoe Museum from Saturday, June 15 to Saturday, June 22, 2013 with a public opening on Sunday, June 16, 2013.
Artists of all ages and abilities, who live in the City and County of Peterborough, are invited to participate in this project with the opportunity to sell their work and support Community Living Peterborough (there is no fee for submission). The portrait submissions must portray a “living” person who is also a resident of the City or County of Peterborough in order to create a living mosaic of our citizens.

The portraits must also express the inclusive nature of our community through themes, for instance, of diversity, culture, ethnicity, gender, ability/disability, age,
and socio-economic standing. The works must be created by hand – including oil, acrylic, watercolour, fabric, ceramics, pottery, mixed media (no digital art or photography) – and must be submitted suitable for wall hanging.

“Collectively, the exhibition will take on the appearance of a tapestry of faces,” explains curator Michael Dumas. “When visitors enter Peterborough in Portrait, they will become an extension of the exhibit, one of the many faces that build our inclusive community.”

Artists are asked to submit their work by Friday, May 31, 2013 to Community Living Peterborough located at 223 Aylmer Street, Peterborough, ON. “Rewire Your Thinking About Aging”

This June will be the biggest celebration of seniors this area has ever seen. The faces of lives well lived, those who care for our seniors, the political leaders who will steer the future of senior care, and the seniors of tomorrow will be featured. The Peterborough Seniors Planning Table has co-ordinated a series of events to mark Seniors' Month in June. This year's events range from a showcase of services, to a full conference featuring Health Minister Deb Matthews along local speakers.

“We need to showcase the diversity, energy and power of the growing seniors community to create a shift in the way we view our own society,” says Seniors Planning Table co-chair Dr. Jenny Ingram.

Statistics Canada reported in 2011 that the number of seniors in Canada is expected to double over the next two decades. In Peterborough, nearly one in five people is 65 or older. The Peterborough Census Metropolitan Area ranked with the highest proportion of seniors population in Canada. Trois-Rivieres, Que., was next on the list at 19.4 per cent, followed by Kelowna, B.C., St. Catharines, Ont., and Victoria, B.C.

“The Seniors Planning Table has broad representation from many sectors in the community.” says Seniors Planning Table co-chair Chris Kawalec. “The focus is to make Peterborough a more age-friendly community and the events in June are a step in the right direction.”

Seniors' Month events will bring together community leaders who play key roles in shaping our aging society. The month will culminate with a conference, The P's and Queues of Healthcare, Politics and Aging: Putting Patients First at Trent University on June 27^th. The Minister of Health, the Honourable Deb Matthews will speak and answer questions at this event along with Dr. Samir Sinha, the provincial lead on Ontario's Seniors Strategy and author of Living Longer, Living Well.

The needs of an aging population require us to “rewire” our thinking about aging, which is why the Seniors Planning Table chose that as its slogan: Rewire Your Thinking About Aging. The costs associated with an ageing population make the current model of seniors' care unsustainable, Dr. Ingram says. Beyond that there are crucial issues of housing, transportation, hospital and home care, communication, lifestyle choices, mobility, and so much more, she adds.

“Peterborough can be a leader in seniors' initiatives so that people stand up and take notice of Peterborough” says Dr. Ingram.

‘Peterborough in Portrait, Our Inclusive Community’ art exhibition in partnership with the Canadian Canoe Museum. Curated by Michael Dumas, Peer Christensen and Jeremy Ward, this art exhibition will feature portraits of people living in Peterborough by people living in Peterborough. The
inclusive exhibition will feature Peterborough’s diverse culture, ethnicity, ability/disability, age, socioeconomic standing and viewpoints. The opening Gala will take place on June 15, 2013. This exhibition will act as Community Living Peterborough’s gift to the Peterborough community for all of their support and recognition and will allow local artists to showcase their work without charge.

The Canadian Canoe Museum is presenting for National Canoe Day in June. Canadian Canoe Museum presents "Small Craft Rendezvous" from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at The Canadian Canoe Museum (910 Monaghan Rd., Peterborough, K9J 5K4) on Saturday June 22nd. If you build, restore, use, own or want to learn more about small watercraft, don’t miss this opportunity to be surrounded by fellow enthusiasts! There will be live demonstrations, workshops, vendors and special guest speakers. Don't miss the chance to engage with NIck Offerman, actor, woodworker and Bear Mountain canoe builder, will be performing during the day sharing his knowledge and thoughtful ideas about woodworking and boat building in his hilarious style. Nick is currently playing the role of Ron Swanson in NBC's Parks and Recreation. The Museum will be open 10am to 5pm and will be free. Preliminary Line Up – 2013

The 15th Annual Lakefield Jazz, Art, and Craft Festival Committee have announced the music line up for the 2013 event to be held Saturday, July 6, at Isabel Morris Park, Lakefield.
Musicians include:
· Jazz/Funk group ZIMZUM
· Fern Lindzon Quartet featuring Mike Murley,
· Tony Padalino and Linda Cara Quartet
· Bridget Foley and the Channel Cats.
Additional groups will be added to the music line up and announced when confirmed.
This marks the 15th year for the event which continues to showcase outstanding Canadian Jazz and Art.
The Festival also features over 30 artists and crafters, a variety of local cuisine, and a licensed
refreshment area.

Ennismore Shamrock Festival

Ennismore hosts the annual Shamrock Festival - Many Events Planned for their three day celebration!

The Ennismore Shamrock Festival Committee has released their schedule for the 2013 celebration in Ennismore on July 19, 20 & 21. The three day Festival will feature a varied program of fun and excitement for all ages to enjoy at the Ennismore Robert E. Young Recreation Complex, 553 Ennis Road, Ennismore, ON.

The party begins on Friday, July 19th with the Video Dance at the
Ennismore Community Centre, beginning at 8pm. Tickets are $15.00 at the door.

Saturday is Family Fun Day with many free children's activities, Airbounce Amusements, sundae making, face painting and crazy hair to name a few. All day BBQ, several local organization booths; Library book sale; Optimist Rookie Ball and Ball Hockey Tournaments, and Family Tyes perform from 11am to 3pm; are among the attractions.

The Annual Truck & Tractor Pulls will be held Sunday, July 21st, rain or shine. Admission is $5.00 per person over 12 years of age.
