You know, whatever you think of Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich (and there are quite a wide array of opinions out there), the guy seems like an alright dude overall. I mean, a quick search of his name on YouTube will bring up plenty of results with titles like “Lars Ulrich – Worst Drummer Ever!” or something along those lines. There are certainly those of us out there who have seen enough of his fails caught on tape to wonder how he’s lasted in the band as long as he has. But to his credit, about 5 years ago, Lars actually came out and said that he feels he’s regressed with his drumming. To acknowledge that you’ve gotten worse at the one thing most of the world knows you for takes balls, and that won him my respect (not that he cares either way about that).
Whether you or I (or Lars for that matter) feel he’s got what it takes or not, he IS the drummer in Metallica, and always has been. Given that drummers seems to have the reputation of being the hardest partiers (Keith Moon, John Bonham, etc. etc.), it’s no surprise that Lars knows how to have a good time – but don’t take my word for it. Comedian Jim Breuer, who you may remember from Saturday Night Live or movies like Half Baked…
… formed a friendship with Lars years ago, and shared some stories of hanging out with Lars on his XM Radio show Breuer Unleashed. To hear what I’m talking about, I recommend you search YouTube for “Jim Breuer’s Lars Ulrich Napsack Story.” I’d link it here, but there’s enough NSFW language to make a sailor blush so I’ll let you be responsible for exposing yourself to that.
Anyway, from that, I wouldn’t take Lars to be the type to be good with kids, but based on his reading of this kid’s Christmas story, maybe I’m wrong.
Another guy who doesn’t strike me as a real kid-friendly dude is Zakk Wylde, but… he’s done the same thing now:
This might be my favourite appearance of Wylde since his cameo on Aqua Teen Hunger Force…
Speaking of ATHF… Keep an eye out for Soccer Claus tonight!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, friends!
