John Dunsworth is best known for portraying the alcoholic trailer park supervisor Jim Lahey in Trailer Park Boys, but off the screen, his life didn’t really bear any resemblance to that of the character he became synonymous with.
The biggest difference: unlike the chronic drunk Lahey, Dunsworth didn’t drink. That liquid inside his liquor bottles? Tea. You wouldn’t have thought twice about it, though, thanks to his incredibly convincing portrayal of a liquor hound. And while Lahey enjoyed gambling in Julian’s bar, Dunsworth actually actively campaigned against addictive gambling.
While it would be easy to just drop in a “Best of Jim Lahey” compilation video to pay tribute to the man, it seems much more fitting to bring to light the things he enjoyed doing off the camera. Not only is there a lot less profanity in that, it paints a picture of a far better role model than Jim Lahey could ever be.
After Dunsworth passed away this week, I was browsing around a Reddit thread with people discussing the impact Dunsworth, Lahey and the Trailer Park Boys in general had had on their lives. There were plenty of Lahey quotes to go around – which is to be expected, and is a perfectly reasonable way to celebrate his legacy. What really got me, though. was this video that one person shared (and that got quickly voted to the top comment). It shows Dunsworth at his home, passing the time by working with rocks and cement.
I watched the whole thing and couldn’t help but be touched by what a positive, caring spirit he came across as. And as someone who feels like it might not be a bad idea to pick up a new hobby, it was a little inspiring. Have a look:
I mean it’s hard not to be inspired by the geography of his home. If I lived on the ocean like that, I’d probably want to do something similar to pass the time as well. That was a few years ago, and a couple years later, Dunsworth invited the cameras back for an update on the work he’d done:
I’m so glad that these videos were made to showcase the gentle kindness that Dunsworth seemed to approach everything with. It’s miles away from anything we would expect from Jim Lahey, and just goes to further show his genius in acting and why he was so beloved by so many.
Farewell, Mr. Dunsworth. You will be missed.
