Last night the Century 21 Lakers put the sweetest finish to a great season by capturing the 2017 Mann Cup in six games over the New Westminster Salmonbellies. All season long the Lakers have played with a chip on their shoulders, remembering the sting of last year’s MSL Finals loss to their nemesis – the Six Nations Chiefs. This year was going to be different!
After a thrilling MSL semi-final in which the Brooklin Redmen pushed the Lakeshow to 7 games, the Lakers got the chance to avenge last season by meeting up with the Chiefs in this year’s MSL Final. The Lakers would not be outworked and they ran through Six Nations on their way to a chance at the Mann Cup which was being held out west this year, at the home of the Salmonbellies, New Westminster BC.
It took the Lakers 2 games to adjust to the harder floor and time change and found themselves looking up from a 2-0 hole. But this is a team with character and they were not going to roll over for New Westminster so they went to work and won the next four games in-a-row to take home the Mann Cup. Congratulations to Shawn Evans who was presented with the Mike Kelly trophy, awarded to the MVP of the Mann Cup. This is the second time Evans won that award. Previously he’d won it in 2010 which ironically was against the Salmonbellies in a series the Lakers won in six games.
Twitter was ablaze last night with the Lakers fans and their celebratory Tweets:
