If you’ve ever checked out any of my Patchy’s Inappropriate Instrumentals blog posts, you know that I’m pretty into songs played on instruments they weren’t written for (or things that aren’t instruments at all). I haven’t done many of those posts lately, but here’s the most recent one if you’re interested in that kind of thing.
One thing that I have featured in the past, but not a ton of it, is orchestras playing rock songs. I always think it’s awesome to see how a rock song written for 3 or 4 instruments translates over to a 20+ piece orchestra. It’s fascinating seeing what instruments will play each part, depending on how it’s arranged.
There’s an orchestra I’ve seen a few videos of on YouTube called Metamorphestra, and as the name might suggest, they’re not your average orchestra. They seem to like covering rock songs with orchestral arrangements, and they’re damn good at it. Here’s a few examples, with the actual songs below.
Radiohead – Bulletproof… I Wish I Was
Aerosmith – Dream On
Muse – Hysteria
Rage Against The Machine – Killing In The Name
Rage Against The Machine – Bulls On Parade
System of a Down – Chop Suey!
And, saving my favourite of the bunch for last, here’s Tool – Schism
