Who do you think of when someone says Batman? Me personally? Well, I think of a few different people. Christian Bale and his perpetually-angrily-yelling take on Bruce Wayne and his alter ego comes to mind. I also think of George Clooney and his plastic nipple suit from Batman & Robin. I might think of Val Kilmer or maybe even Michael Keaton (though that’s a little before my time. In fact, if it weren’t for more recent cartoons featuring him, I might not even have any idea who Adam West (who played the title role in the 1960’s Batman sitcom) is. The older generations (around my parents’ age) probably have quite fond memories of West as Batman – I know my step-mom does.
And how can you not with bits of gold like this?
Remember that time he fought a shark? I didn’t… But I do now:
But, like I said, if you were born after, say, the early 60’s, you may only recognize him thanks to cameos in more recent TV series… Like The Simpsons for example:
You know, that’s a good question: Why doesn’t Batman dance anymore?
That wasn’t West’s only appearance on The Simpsons:
These days, however, the younger generations are more likely to recognize West as Mayor Adam West of Quahog, Rhode Island – a staple of Family Guy. It’s hard to find a scene where he’s not hilarious:
And there’s a couple of the same scenes in this one, but it’s totally worth watching both:
What’s really cool is hearing the man himself discussing the different voiceover work he did throughout the years:
Adam West passed away peacefully Friday, surrounded by family after a short battle with leukemia. He was 88.
