If you like eating spicy foods and testing the limits of how much burn you can take, then you’re probably familiar with the light-headed, almost out-of-body experience you can have when you take in a lot of capsaicin.
I’ve tested my limits a few times, and if I were to describe it in a photo, it would be this:
That photo is from my first ever visit to Chilly Chiles, the largest hot sauce store in Canada. As you can see, I’m sweating and gasping for air, and I think I was even crying a little bit. But that was after trying a number of pretty strong hot sauces.
Included in those were some ghost pepper-based sauces. I don’t think I’d ever have the balls to try and eat a ghost pepper straight up though. I only like torturing myself to a certain point.
Competitive eater L.A. Beast (real name Kevin Strahle) has no such limit, apparently. Just a couple days ago, he broke Guinness World Record for Most Ghost Peppers Eaten in Two Minutes… And it was pretty gnarly:
Sorry, did I say he broke the record? Because I meant he actually destroyed it, eating nearly double what the previous record was. 121 grams of ghost peppers. I mean, my mouth was burning even just watching the video.
For an idea of how hot those ghost peppers are, let’s just jalapenos as a reference point – since for many people that’s about as hot as they’ll go. Well the ghost pepper can rate in anywhere between 107 to 417 times as hot as a jalapeno, according to pepperscale.com. No wonder he needed that milk at the end.
L.A. Beast is no stranger to spicy foods though. A few months ago, he did the #OneChipChallenge, where he actually goes above and beyond and eats a few of Paqui Tortilla Chips’ Carolina Reaper Madness chips. They’re coated with dust from a Carolina Reaper pepper, which is the absolute hottest pepper in the world. Check out how he handled it:
See, that looks like too much for me. He perfectly describes the feeling I’ve had numerous times at Chilly Chile’s. For spicy stuff like that, I’d usually be on board to at least give it a try… But in the case of these two challenges, I’m just as happy to watch someone else do it instead.
What’s the hottest thing you’ve ever eaten?
