Does that there doggo look familiar to you? If you spend time poking around the internet, he probably does. His name is Gabe, and he’s the star of the Gabe The Dog / Bork Remixes, a rather popular meme on YouTube.
I first discovered Gabe as one of the many musical animals in a series of “Animal cover” music videos on the ol’ YouTube, a number of which I included on this blog post. Here’s a couple examples:
We get a glimpse of Gabe right off the bat in this one:
And we get a solid dose of Gabe in this one too:
I’m going to share a bunch more further down, but first let’s have a look at how Gabe came to be known across the internet, with info from KnowYourMeme.
Gabe was a miniature American Eskimo / Pomeranian mix owned by a Canadian YouTuber who goes by deathtrips. On January 8, 2013, a video of Gabe barking called “The New Dog Source” was uploaded to YouTube.
In November 2014, another video of Gabe called “Newest Dog Source” was uploaded.
Though there are plenty more videos of Gabe that have been uploaded by his owner, I’d say those two are by far the most sampled ones for the meme.
Before we get into some of the great examples that could very likely have you rolling on the floor laughing, I should be transparent about why I was inspired to write this blog in the first place. Gabe passed away a couple of days ago.
After the amount of laughs he gave me, the least I could do is put together a little tribute to this cute little guy. He will forever be immortalized in the many remix videos he starred in.
One of the more popular remixes around is this one, featuring the Herb Alpert song The Midnight Tango:
But there’s so many golden nuggets out there… Like this cover of A-Ha’s Take On Me:
Or Haddaway’s What Is Love:
Star Wars fans will get a kick out of his version of the Imperial March, on a convenient 10 hour repeat:
This one may just be my favourite of them all – a cover of Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now:
What about Wham!’s Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go)?
There’s Jurassic Bork:
And Indiana Borks:
Ever heard of M.O.O.N.? Doesn’t matter, because this remix of the song Hydrogen is glorious:
There’s a remix of George Michael’s Careless Whisper:
And Men Without Hats’ The Safety Dance… Speaking of, remember when Men Without Hats came to the Red Dog? That was a fun show:
And then, there’s Europe’s The Final Countdown
Do you remember Doing the Hustle? Even if you’re too young to actually remember the 1975 hit from Van McCoy (I am), you probably recognize the tune. Even if you don’t, the whole point of the video is the dog borking the tune… For an hour.
I did play a lot of Kirby’s Dream Land when I was a youngster, so Borky’s Meme Land hits close to home:
Some genius took the raw video of Gabe, turned on YouTube’s closed captioning, then fed the results into text-to-speech software on a computer and replaced the audio of the borks with how YouTube interpreted them, as spoken by a computer. You can read that explanation, or just watch the damn video:
And that’s all I got for right now. Not enough for you? Just google “Gabe the dog” or “Bork” and I’m sure you’ll find plenty more.
