I’m a big fan of metal in most of its forms. The thing with metal, however, is that a lot of the bands out there take themselves REALLY seriously. So it’s pretty refreshing when a band that is poking fun at itself comes around. And I mean, using a gimmick that will attract countless fans of The Simpsons was pretty smart on the part of Okilly Dokilly, the Ned Flanders-themed metal band.
On Friday, they released their first album. Leading up to that, they released their first video, for the song White Wine Spritzer:
Of course, the inspiration for that song would be this classic scene from when Homer and Ned visit Las Vegas:
According to Alternative Press, the idea for the band came about from a session of trying to pick really friendly names for really angry hardcore punk bands.
Okilly Dokilly has given Ned the edge he deserves by creating a Flanders-themed band that both look and sound the part. They’ve even scrapped calling themselves metal, instead deeming their music “Nedal”. Oh, and their members’ names? Head Ned (vocals, screams, guitars, bass, mandolin, percussion), Red Ned (synth, vocals), Stead Ned (guitars), Thread Ned (bass), and Bled Ned (drums). They’re based out of Phoenix, Arizona.
And the swell dudes in Okilly Dokilly have at long last graced us with their debut full-length, just about a year after swooping onto the scene with their initial demos. The album is very appropriately titled Howdilly Doodilly, and the lyrical content is 75 percent direct Flanders quotes, and 25 percent other characters and originals.
The band members themselves dress in the same attire that you’ll usually find Flanders sporting, and they even have the mustaches to top it all off. In an interview with Music Feeds, Head Ned explained the origins of the band’s concept.
“Myself and Bled Ned were trying to come up with really friendly names for really angry hardcore punk bands. Okilly Dokilly came about and the name introduced the idea of us becoming the character. The puns started to flow and the reasons not to do this band dwindled like a box of donuts in the break room at the plant.”
And it’s true, their lyrics literally are all just Simpsons quotes. Remember that time Ned freaked out on the community when they came together to (shoddily) rebuild his house?
You know that got turned into a song.
And who doesn’t wave their butt around saying “Feels like I’m wearin’ nothin’ at all! Nothin’ at all! NOTHIN’ AT ALL!” when wearing a particularly tight pair of pants?
The world’s only Nedal band is no different.
Remember when Ned, Rod and Todd returned home to find the house slightly askew and ran directly into the panic room? Ned had a nice little singalong for the boys.
Of course they turned that singalong into a song.
And who could forget when Ned was revealed to be the devil?
Obviously inspiration for another song!
The one thing I noticed that seems to take just a tiny bit of credibility away from them is the fact that they don’t play their instruments left-handed. As the owner of the Leftorium, Ned is obviously a southpaw. But I’ve seen Beatles tribute acts where the person playing Paul is playing a Hofner bass right-handed, a mirror image of the real Paul.
