Summer is in full swing. The kids are done school, and pretty soon parents everywhere are going to be going insane trying to figure out what to do with them. Fortunately it’s the perfect season for kids to be outside – and the options are limitless.
Given that the forecast is calling for a hotter than average summer, everyone will be looking for ways to keep cool. Visiting a beach (that doesn’t make you itchy) is always a popular choice. A nice alternative to that is a swimming pool… But for the ultimate in refreshment, how about a swimming pool filled with a beverage known (at least thanks to advertisers) for its refreshment?
When I was a kid, I would drink a lot of Coca-Cola. I loved it. Give me a glass with some ice and I’d drink that stuff all night. Somewhere within the last 7 or 8 years, my thirst for Coke has waned. I’ll still have one now and then but it’s just not the same. I don’t know for sure, but it might have something to do with the fact that around that time, I also started drinking rum with that Coke, and well… You know how young people do.
At any rate, this looks like a lot of fun… But even just seeing such a huge amount of Coca-Cola has given me a mild case of heartburn.
My first thought when I saw that was “That looks… sticky.” Although the part where they threw the Mentos in was kinda cool… It reminded me of that episode of The Simpsons where Lance Murdock jumps the tank of exotic aquatic animals that has a single drop of human blood…
For the impatient: Skip to 0:45 to see what I mean.
For better effect though, they might have used Diet Coke, which seems to work better with Mentos than regular Coke.
Can you believe this video was uploaded over 10 years ago now?!
Now I’m sure the dude that jumped in there ran straight into a shower afterwards… Which kind of begs the question, “WHY?”
Why would they spend weeks buying thousands of bottles of Coke? Why would they spend hours dumping all of those bottles into a pool? Why would they then bathe in that pool? And why would they wreck a perfectly good drone by flying it into a Coke bath?!
Probably out of boredom mainly… But perhaps it was FOR SCIENCE!
Well let me tell you, I once did something similar for science that left me feeling kinda sticky and gross afterward.
It was four years ago, and I was only a month into my gig here at The Wolf. We’d been asked to put together a couple science fair experiment videos to help promote the Peterborough Regional Science Fair at Trent University. Brian made a potato battery, Kearnsy made a TV remote that would beep so you could find it… And for some reason, I decided to make a Diet Coke and Mentos rocket inside my own stomach.
If you managed to make it through that whole video, you’ll see that… well, nothing happened. I got a little gassy and burped a bit, but beyond that, nothing good came of it – even after running a lap of the parking lot and doing an additional lap on my longboard while continuing to eat Mentos and drink Diet Coke. It’s also worth noting that this was my second attempt at making this video, as the first fell victim to the dreaded vertical video curse. For someone who doesn’t usually like Diet Coke on a good day… It was a lot.
But hey, it was fun… Which is probably the same reason those dudes made that Coke pool in the first place.
