This past week in the news, there was a story about a driver who was charged with distracted driving after his Jeep ended up in the Trent Canal in Campbellford, and he swam to shore cell phone in hand.
While my first reaction is to laugh, I can’t help but feel for the driver who likely didn’t mean to end up in the canal… But it reminded me of a video that’s gone viral recently online of a guy intentionally driving his Jeep into some deep water with predictable results.
That guy was just asking for trouble going cruising in water period, let alone ocean water which is bound to rust the hell out of his Jeep… Then again, many Jeep drivers seem to have a fascination with taking their Jeeps places where they don’t really want to go…
I get that this is actually a popular pastime for Jeep owners – going off-roading, rock climbing, etc. It’s a Jeep thing, you wouldn’t understand.

Or maybe it was another case of a GPS misleading someone, like that woman in Tobermory, or Michael in The Office:
But driving through water, even in a vehicle that’s well equipped for it with an engine snorkel, is a pretty risky move… I mean look at the trouble this Jeep, which should in theory make it through okay, has:
If that’s what happens in a vehicle more or less equipped for that type of thing… What happens when you do it with a car that’s not meant for it?
I guess the moral of the story is, to steal a line from the OLGC… Know your vehicle’s limit, drive within it.
