Paul Gilbert is pretty much a certified Guitar God… Or at least he would be if there were actually a certification for that. The guy knows his way around the neck. He first rose to prominence shredding on his guitar for Racer X in the mid-80’s.
But he found a little more mainstream exposure with Mr. Big… You know, these guys:
I’ve been a huge fan of Gilbert since I first discovered him on YouTube years ago (I know, I’m way behind in the curve… but when that Racer X album above came out, I hadn’t even been born yet!), being quite impressed by his shredding in songs like Scarified…
And Technical Difficulties…
And then there’s stuff like the title track off the album Get Out Of My Yard, a piece that requires three hands, so Gilbert has someone else stand there beside him and basically be a moving capo.
I especially like his “Guitar Tricks” …
So needless to say, if you’re a fan of guitar wizardry, this is a guy you need to pay attention to.
His new album, I CAN DESTROY is due out next Friday (May 27), but about three weeks ago, Gilbert debuted the video for the first single… And it’s a perfect song for all the folks battling cottage country traffic this weekend.
It’s called Everybody Use Your G**D*** Turn Signal, and here’s the video:
Gilbert says that he always focuses more on writing the guitar parts for songs than lyrics, and you can kind of tell that lyric writing isn’t his biggest strength, but he still manages to capture the feelings many of us feel on the road on a regular basis, AND of course get some sweet guitar solos in there.
So remember… Use your goshdarn turn signal!
And in case you know someone who doesn’t know how, feel free to share this with them:
