As a born-and-raised Jays fan, I find it hard to cheer for the Boston Red Sox – especially since they picked up David Price. I know, I know – the Jays didn’t even make him an offer and there was no way he was going to stay in Toronto anyway, but nobody wants to see an ace like him go to a division rival team.
At any rate, despite my desire to see the BoSox go down hard, it’s hard not to crack a smile with this story.

You see, David Ortiz promised a 5-year-old fan from Wyoming named Maverick (like in Top Gun!) that he’d hit a home run for him in his next game. Maverick was born with a serious congenital heart defect called tetralogy of fallot. He’s already undergone upwards of 30 surgeries, and will likely have many, many more. Maverick happens to be a big Red Sox fan, and in February, he traded videos back and forth with Josh Beckett and Kevin Millar, both former Red Sox, the latter currently being a Red Sox commentator. In one of the videos, Maverick talked about how his favourite player was Big Papi, so Millar said when he saw Ortiz during spring training, he would tell the slugger about his young fan out west.
Before last night’s game at Fenway Park, Millar met up with Ortiz and the two recorded a video message that they sent to Maverick.

As you can see, Ortiz promised Maverick he’d sock a dinger for him in the next game. And Big Papi doesn’t seem to me like a man who takes promises lightly. Sure enough, in the bottom of the 8th with the game tied at 2, Ortiz came to bat against Yankees pitcher Dellin Betances, widely recognized as one of the better relievers in baseball. All it took was one pitch for him to see what he wanted and take it over the Green Monster.
A David Ortiz home run is usually a thing of beauty to begin with (except when it comes off a Blue Jays pitcher), and certainly not a rarity, with this one marking the 507th in his career – but this one might just be the best one of all. And of course Maverick was watching.
Shortly after, Maverick and his mom sent this video back to Millar and Ortiz:
Talk about a big win – not just for the Red Sox but for Big Papi and his biggest fan!
But not for the Red Sox bat boy…
