It seems as though the next big trend in automotive technology is driverless cars. Personally, as a lover of cars and fan of driving, I don’t understand the appeal. Why would you want to take the power OUT of the driver’s hands?
I mean, there are some benefits to this. Someone who isn’t so great at driving can relax a little bit and let the car do most of the decision making. And it’s not like it’s a requirement to turn on autopilot, merely an option. This isn’t an option that will let you take a nap while at the wheel or anything like that – in fact, I do believe that laws on driverless cars require that there be a person in the driver’s seat at all times, ready to intervene should an emergency arise.
Now of course, Google is known for their work on driverless car technology, and Tesla has been making headlines with theirs too. In fact, there are some pretty cool things you can get a Tesla car to do already.
Like, for example… What if you wanted to get your car out of the garage to have it waiting for you out front, but aren’t quite ready to head outside yet? There’s an app for that.
That in itself is pretty cool, but so is the Tesla autopilot feature, which will essentially drive the car for you. You shouldn’t EVER leave the driver’s seat while the car is in motion, but the person behind this video decided to do just that while travelling down a Dutch highway. Have a look:
What amazing technology… A car driving itself, in a 360p resolution video… Seriously though, don’t ever even think about doing that – because while it holds the lane in that video there and nothing bad happens, you never know what could go wrong, and you certainly want to be within reach of the controls should you need to take over.
So we see that it works on the highway… How does it work in Los Angeles rush hour traffic? Apparently pretty well.
Auto-parking technology has been around now for a little while, but that feature is also included on Tesla models.
Jalopnik writer Michael Ballaban made a video showing just how wonderful and creepy the technology is:
