Some people would argue that this is good, old-tyme hockey… But I don’t recall the officials getting involved in the fisticuffs being part of that. Check out this video from November 20th of last year (that just surfaced yesterday) of a London Lakers Junior A hockey game where things got a little… heated.
As you can see in the video below, it all begins when a Lakers player runs over the Kingsville Kings‘ goalie. Obviously, that’s a big no-no in hockey, and the offending player is quickly approached by a couple Lakers, and a good ol’ fashioned brawl breaks out. Eventually the officials jump in to try and break things up, but things were already kind of out of hand. This particular linesman jumped into the melee to try and calm the players down, but as it started to subside, he found himself still tangled with a Lakers player… And that’s when the linesman loses his cool.
Check out the video:
As you can see, that’s not even where it ends, as a Lakers’ trainer then comes bounding off the bench and tackles the official to the ice.
In the aftermath, the linesman involved has been banned from the league for life. The trainer was placed on indefinite league suspension, but has since resigned from the team.
The GMHL released this statement yesterday on the controversy.
Was the linesman justified? Probably not, because the player certainly wasn’t expecting that punch (which apparently cut him, in addition to knocking him over). Maybe he just wanted to avoid being like these guys?
Remember kids, keep your stick on the ice.
Our sister station in London, FM96, did an interview with the Coach and GM of the London Lakers, Jeff Zehr. Here’s what he had to say:
