If you weren’t too busy watching the Leafs lose last night like I was, and took in the Montreal Canadiens – St. Louis Blues game instead, you probably witnessed what could very well end up being the hit of the year in the NHL.

Check out the video of it:
Now as seems to always be the way in today’s NHL, there was an instant reaction from the Blues, despite the fact that it looks to be a clean hit. Maybe not at first, at full speed, but when you look again, the shoulder appears to be the initial point of contact. Sure, the elbow and arm come up, but it looks to be after Stastny is already on his way to the ice. But it could be the fact that Stastny was recently injured (and is clearly still wearing a full cage on his helmet) that caused his teammates to jump in. At any rate, Emelin came out with a thundering clean hit, and the Blues ended up in the penalty box for retaliating.
Fortunately, Stastny didn’t appear to be injured any further on the play.
You know what that hit kind of reminds me of? A good old-fashioned explosive Dion Phaneuf bodycheck!
