One of the trademarks of The Simpsons is the couch gag at the start of every episode. You know what I’m talking about – during the opening credits, the family all rushes into the house toward the couch, and usually something strange or funny happens. If you DON’T know what I’m talking about, watch this montage:
That video is in what appears to be German, so in the cases where the characters actually speak, it’s been dubbed over in German.
As you can see, though, the couch gag started out pretty simply at first, with small things happening as the family sits on the couch… But through the years it’s gotten more and more elaborate.
And what may just be the most elaborate couch gag yet is set to air at the beginning of tomorrow night’s episode, “Teenage Mutant Milk-Caused Hurdles.” The crew behind the show handed opening-credit duties over to animator Steve Cutts, who reimagined Homer as a crime-fighting stud à la Don Johnson and went on to create a very Miami Vice-style intro for the show. Give it a look:
When watching this, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the Top Gun spoof that Archer did as a promo for its fifth season:
Anyway, like I said, that couch gag will air at the start of tomorrow night’s episode… But you can tell all your friends you saw it here first!
