When you think of late Motörhead frontman Ian Fraser “Lemmy” Kilmister and his beverage of choice, you probably think of Jack Daniel’s. Among other things, Lemmy was known for drinking a whole bottle of Jack every day. In recent years he switched from whiskey to vodka for health reasons. And of course, in his signature style, the switch came with a rather choice quote:
“I like orange juice better, so Coca-Cola can f*** off!”
Yep, sounds about right. Still, Lemmy was so closely associated with the classic Jack & Coke that there’s been a petition circulating around the internet to rename that drink the “Lemmy.”
One beverage Lemmy is NOT associated with? Milk. Well, he wasn’t associated with it until now.
Finnish dairy company Valio has revealed that they shot a commercial with Lemmy less than a month before his death while Motörhead were touring Finland. Here it is:
It just goes to show that right to the end, Lemmy was his cheeky, profane self. The spot was shot in the Helsinki neighbourhood of Maunula, near the Hartwall Arena, where the band played that night (it also happens to be one of the arenas used recently in the World Junior Hockey Championship). Originally, Valio was aiming to recreate one of their commercials from 20 years ago. The original (which can be seen below) is almost identical to this one, though this time around the character is speaking English. It wasn’t supposed to include the ad-libbed line at the end – that was just something Lemmy threw in during one of the multiple takes.
When he passed away, Valio wasn’t sure if they should continue with it. From The Daily Mail:
Jussi Lindholm, chief operating officer of hasan & partners, said: ‘We discussed not airing the ad but had footage that was not part of the original script, which crystalised Lemmy’s spirit, so we agreed to change it and make a tribute.’
Lemmy’s management gave the tribute the okay, and now we have this – a little tribute to Lemmy that simultaneously reminds us of what a badass he was AND – well, I don’t know about you folks, but I’m kinda tempted to drink a glass of milk now.
Here’s the original, 20-year-old commercial:
Valio seems have a few pretty interesting advertisements for their milk. There’s one in particular that will be your top result if you do a Google Image Search for “Valio milk ad.” I won’t post it here, and if you do a quick search, you’ll probably understand why.
Oh, by the way, at the time of publishing this, we’re only about half an hour away from the live stream of Lemmy’s funeral. If you want to watch, you can find the stream RIGHT HERE.
