By now, if you’re a hardcore Star Wars fan, then you’ve already seen the trailer for Episode VII: The Force Awakens. If you haven’t seen it, or just want to watch it again, here it is:
So what was the first thing you thought of the trailer? Perhaps it was this…
Maybe it was excitement over the fact that the Millennium Falcon is back?
But if you’re a Star Wars purist, probably the biggest thing that stuck out to you was the new lightsaber.

The general consensus on the internet seems to be that the new lightsaber with crossguard looks pretty cool, even though it’s kind of pointless. I mean really, the only thing it’s likely to do is injure the person wielding it. With traditional swords, the crossguard is there to protect your hands from an opponent’s sword sliding down and cutting them off. However, if you’ve ever seen a lightsaber battle, you know that they don’t slide – they tend to ‘stick’ together when they meet.
Now while there were those who thought “Hey that looks cool,” then closed the browser and went about their day, there were a BUNCH of people who decided to take it upon themselves to offer up more unique lightsaber designs.
In fact, the short scene containing the new lightsaber has spawned a TON of humorous takes on the new design.

And some people thought that the new crossblades weren’t enough. If you’re going to add to the classic design, why not go “all the way?” The following are from this Reddit post.
In searching for these, I came across a couple hilarious fake lightsaber .gifs that I just had to share with you.
Now obviously fans are making all these parodies of the new lightsaber because I’m sure many of them feel like straying from the original is going to ruin the movie. That being said, many fans have also said they think it looks cool. The hardcore fans can complain all they want, but I doubt it’ll make a lick of difference. At this point, they’re probably beating a dead horse…
Honestly, the thing I’m most excited for with the new installment of Star Wars is the resolution of THIS particular storyline:
At any rate, it’s going to be quite some time yet before we get to enjoy the spectacle that The Force Awakens is likely to be. The release date is far, far away: December 2015. Will you be first in line when it hits theatres?
