Okay friends, it’s confession time.
Not that it’ll come as a surprise to anyone, but I’m a pretty awful golfer. I mean, I love to go out and play 18 holes whenever I get the chance, but that doesn’t happen nearly as often as I’d like. I think my game reflects that.
For example, the last round I played was at Baxter Creek Golf Club. I shot a 108 on their par-72 course.
I think I might have a better shot at being a pro golf photographer than a pro golfer.
Honestly, I think the best aspect of my golf game is my ability to hit the ball collector cart while I’m on the driving range. Don’t tell me you’ve never tried to do that. I’m sure anyone who’s ever visited a driving range has.
That being said, I’ve never hit a person with a ball.
As Mitch Hedberg continued in that joke, “What’s par for hitting a guy? One. If you hit a guy in two, you are an asshole!”
Still, if I ever were to hit someone, I doubt I’d be able to do it with the precision and class that Rory McIlroy did yesterday at the Tour Championship.
If you missed it, he hit his tee shot at the 14th hole directly into a spectator’s pocket. Here, have a look:
From The Big Lead:
Rory McIlroy hit his drive on the par 4 14th at The Tour Championship into a spectator’s pocket. The spectator was asked not to move while Rory and an official made their way to him to decide how to properly play the ball. Rory took a drop and then hit a nice wedge onto the green.
While the fan didn’t get to keep the ball that landed in his pocket, he did walk away with a very unique story, a handshake from Rory, and likely a souvenir of some sort.
What are the chances? Then, immediately following the confusion, McIlroy hits a nice shot which drops right on the green. I have trouble teeing off in front of a course ranger, let alone a whole crowd of people. How he keeps his composure with all the people around and manages to hit such a beautiful shot right after blows my mind…
But I guess that’s just everyday life for a pro golfer.
