There have been rumblings of a new Foo Fighters album in the works for months now. It was last halloween that the band officially put an end to the hiatus they had been on by announcing a series of shows in Mexico with this great promo video.
So, though we knew a Foos album was on the way, we had no idea when. It was announced just a couple days ago, however, that the new album would be released alongside the debut of Dave Grohl‘s new HBO series.
The show, which is still without a title, will chronicle the making of the new album, with each of the eight tracks recorded in a different city – Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin, Nashville, New Orleans, Seattle, New York and Washington, DC. Each of the tracks also features a local music legend from the locale in which they’re recording, with the lyrics being written at the end of the sessions in order to “be inspired by the experiences, interviews and personalities that became part of the process.”
The show will be shot in the same documentary format as Grohl’s excellent Sound City film, and will be what he calls “a love letter to the history of American music.”
If you’ve never seen Sound City, I highly recommend it. I actually took a trip to Toronto to see it on the big screen when it was released, because I was just that excited about it. I was not disappointed.
As for the new album, the band has remained pretty tight lipped about it. The most that has come out about it is that they’re recording it in a way that no other artist has ever recorded an album. Originally I thought maybe they’d be making it in space or something, but I don’t think that’s it… Since they’re still on earth.
Drummer Taylor Hawkins recently had this to say about the new album:
“Yeah, there’s an interesting way we’re doing the tracking, it’s going to be more than just a record. I think all of our records from now on will always be that way because I think Dave understands in order to promote a product musically these days, you need more than just a record. In the ’80s and ’90s a lot of it was just making a video. Well, they don’t show videos anymore. It’s up on YouTube. You just have to think outside of the box, you really do. Dave is always thinking outside the box.”
“Essentially, I don’t know what I’m trying to say other than this is going to be an exciting couple of years for the Foo Fighters once we’re done with this little deal we’re doing here. Can’t really reveal too much, I don’t want to. I want to keep it kind of exciting and I don’t want to be the guy that lets the cat out of the bag. I’ve been that guy before, I don’t want to be that guy again. But, it’s going to be great. If you’re a Foo Fighters fan, you’re going to love it. If you’re not, than don’t worry about it. Change the channel.”

However, when you read stories posted since that interview with Hawkins (which I just did now), it seems that the album that will be featured the show is actually the very album they’ll be releasing at the same time… So in theory, you can listen to the album, and then watch how each individual song was made. Billboard.com has a few more details on it.
As a longtime Foo Fighters fan, I gotta say… I’m pretty stoked!
